On the docket this morning, some posturing regarding the future of Deion Branch in Seattle and a potential landing spot for Tim Ruskell in Chicago. Those two facts are not related though Branch is one of the single most identifying personnel decisions Ruskell made in his five years as Seahawks general manager and president ... Branch's future is coming into question. He is signed for two more years in Seattle, and is scheduled to make $5.47 million next season according to the NFL Players
ESPN sportscaster Rece Davis issued a challenge to Washington fans to "do something special" when the network brings its College GameDay crew to Seattle for Saturday's UW-UCLA game ... Davis said "Gonzaga has been great every time we were there. Cal was a trip last year that we will never forget. What do you have for us Purple Nation of U-Dub?" ... Not sure who the Purple Nation is. Maybe he was referring to the Dawg Pack. And maybe this challenge is a gimmick to generate excitement in a game
Ricky Foley was signed last week, mixed in with two long-snappers and a punter ... He was the CFL leader in sacks last season with 12, and the easy thing would be to write that the Seattle Seahawks have looked to their north in an effort to elevate the sack totals ... But no one should get too carried away. Not yet anyway. Foley is listed at 6 feet, 245 pounds on his official profile with the B.C. Lions. That's undersized for an NFL defensive end in a 4-3 scheme, and probably explains why New
Mike Sweeney has signed a minor league deal with the Mariners and will be invited to spring training. Was just discussing this with Larry Stone over lunch yesterday, wondering why Sweeney had not been invited back. He had a very strong finish to last season once his back woes were worked out ... The Mariners are not likely to add Sweeney to their major league roster by Opening Day, given their stated desire to have players who can still play a position. Ken Griffey Jr. is already there as
About two-dozen people turned out for the first of three public meetings devoted to finding Seattle’s next police chief. It took place at the Northgate Community Center on Feb. 10. Not unexpectedly, crime was on the minds of some who spoke.Tunny Vann, a UW student, cited an event that happened the day before, during which a SWAT team showed up a few blocks north of campus ... Vann, chair of a campus committee on student safety, said he learned of it after the fact by friends who questioned why
Seems like it's time to shift the paradigm when discussing the Huskies. Let's forget about the Final Four (Wow, doesn't that seem silly in hindsight?) and repeating as Pac-10 champion. With six games remaining in the regular-season, it's time to start thinking about Pac-10 tournament seeding. Seriously ... Washington is sixth in the conference, however, USC is higher in the standings and the Trojans are on a self-imposed postseason tournament ban. So that makes UW fifth and right now it would
"SMALL THINGS" by SONOAZURE from our Flickr pool ... With just seven games left in the regular season, the UW men’s basketball team still hasn't won on the road. Tonight at Cal, they’ll try once again to shake the monkey that’s climbed onto their backs every time they step outside Hec-Ed ... We think the road monkey came from Lubbock, TX, where the Huskies first lost on December 3. Ever since, it’s lived somewhere in the trees along the Burke-Gilman foraging for berries, judging bikers
The Seattle Seahawks signed Matt Overton, a long snapper, according to Overton's agent ... Overton attended Western Washington, and this past season played for the Florida Tuskers of the UFL ... Overton received a tryout with the Seahawks at a rookie minicamp in May 2007 ... Seattle used two long-snappers last season: Kevin Houser, who played the first 14 games before suffering a collapsed lung. Jeff Robinson finished out the season. Neither Robinson nor Houser are under contract with Seattle
Photo credit: Jim Bates ... There's been a lot of interest in the new design (above) that appears periodically among advertisements below the scorer's table at Washington men's basketball games ... The design debuted Jan. 30 at the Washington State game, however, a school spokesman said it is not a new logo, but rather an "in-house graphic to promote Husky athletics." There are no plans by the school to place the graphic on merchandise ... Washington is slowly phasing out its secondary logo, a
Chris Bushnell photo from Facebook ... Chris Bushnell, Senior Advisor to Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn resigned yesterday afternoon after it was revealed that he lied about having a doctoral degree from the University of Washington ... He was also convicted in 1994 of felony bank fraud, although McGinn says he knew about Bushnell’s criminal record when he hired him ... Publicola was the first to break the news of Bushnell’s resume padding last week ... “Christopher Bushnell, PhD” is visible
